Cross-literary relations (German-Spanish, German-Italian, German-English) with an emphasis on Baroque and Romantic Literature. Teaching includes courses on German cultural history, German literary movements from the Storm and Stress to the Romantic Periods, and comparative literature classes on the Renaissance, Romanticism and the picaresque novel. Author of numerous books and essays on European Baroque and Romantic literature, and coauthor of Germany 2000 Years, vol. 3 (1992). Currently working on Weimar Classicism and a book on Petrarch.
