How do I declare a major or a double major?
Come to the department office, Phelps 6206, to fill out a “Petition to Change Major.” You must bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope to submit the petition to the college. The “catalog year” is the academic year you declare the major, like 2005-06, or 2006-07. To declare a double major, you will also need to complete a “Memo of Understanding for Double Majors” form. We will help you complete these forms in the office. You do not need to complete the lower-division requirements before you declare the major.
What is a double major?
Students with interest and talent in two separate major fields may propose completion of a double major. In their proposal, they must estimate the number of units they will need to complete in satisfying degree requirements and the term in which they will become eligible to graduate. In general, double majors are approved for students who demonstrate that they can meet all degree requirements without exceeding 200 units of credit from all institutions attended. Students who receive approval for a double major will be allowed to continue their studies at UCSB only through the final quarter listed on their proposal. No more than 8 units may be applied simultaneously to the upper-division requirements of the two majors.
How do I declare a minor?
Come to the department office, Phelps 6206, and fill out a “Petition to Declare the Minor.” It is so easy!
When should I declare a major/minor?
The sooner the better, but sometime before your final quarter. As soon as you declare the major or minor, we will add you to the department listserv to receive emails about department events, courses, and other important info.
How long does it take for my major/minor to appear on GOLD?
Majors usually take two or three weeks. Minors do not show up on GOLD, but they will appear on your diploma and on your final transcripts.
When will I receive the minor?
It is your responsibility to notify the undergraduate advisor during your last quarter that you have fulfilled the required classes for a minor. The advisor then completes a minor clearance form showing the fulfillment of classes for your minor and files it with the College of Letters & Science. Without the clearance form your minor will not be official.
