German Placement Exam
Who should take it?
Students who plan to study German at UCSB to satisfy major or General Education requirements, or to pursue an elective interest. Students with AP Test scores, Higher Level IB Exam scores, or SAT Subject Test Scores do not need to take the placement exam; see the chart below for correct placement.
When can I take it?
The exam is multiple choice and takes 40 minutes. You may take the exam anytime during the department office hours, Monday-Friday 8am-noon and 1pm-5pm. The Dept. of Germanic, Slavic and Semitic Studies is located in Phelps Hall 6206. Please allow time to complete the exam before the office closes.
What if I took the AP Test, Higher Level IB Exam or SAT Subject Test in German?
German Placement Guidelines 2006
AP Test Scores in German Language:
Score of 3 ------ May not enroll in German 1-3 for credit
Score of 4 or 5 - May not enroll in German 1-4 for credit
Higher Level IB Scores in German:
Score of 5, 6, or 7 - May not enroll in German 1-6 for credit (Placement into German 101A)
SAT Subject Test Scores:
SAT Subject Test score of 570 in German Language places a student into German 4 and satisfies Area B of General Education.
What if I took German at another college?
Speak to the department undergraduate advisor for appropriate language placement. We will need to see a course description and/or a course syllabus. Students who are transferring any college coursework in a language should not take the language placement exam, but instead use their transfer credit as a guide for language placement. Generally, two semesters of a language is equal to one year at UCSB (3 quarters).
Russian Placement Exam
When can I take it?
The exam consists of a written part and an oral part. You may take the written portion anytime during the department office hours, Monday-Friday 8am-noon and 1pm-5pm. The Dept. of Germanic, Slavic and Semitic Studies is located in Phelps Hall 6206. Please allow 1 hour to complete the written test.
Then contact the faculty advisor, Larry McLellan, to arrange a time to complete the oral portion. His email is: mclellan@gss.ucsb.edu. He will finish scoring your test and tell you what level of Slavic you place into.
What if I took Russian at another college?

Hebrew or Yiddish Exam
When can I take it?
For Hebrew, contact Professor Sara Wheeler at ohevet@sbcglobal.net to arrange a time to meet with her. She will assess your Hebrew language knowledge and recommend the appropriate Hebrew class at UCSB.
For Yiddish, contact Professor Arthur Schwartz at arthurschwartz@hotmail.com to arrange a time to meet with him. He will assess your knowledge of Yiddish.
