Bachelor of Arts - German
Preparation for the major:
German 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (with
grades of C or higher) or placement beyond
German 6 in the departmental placement examination. German 8A-B-C
is recommended. Note: Students who have completed a more advanced
course in a lower-division sequential series will not be permitted
to take a course that is lower in the series.
Upper-division major:
40 UD
units, distributed as follows:
A. Two courses from: German 101A-B-C
B. German
107A-B-C (History and Culture)
C. German 190 (Jr./Senior Proseminar)
D. German
103 or 104 (Phonetics/Lang)
E. German
115A or B or C (Literature)
F. 12 units of German electives
No more than 8 units of electives may be taught in English. Four units of electives may be an UD Comparative Literature course taught
by a faculty member from the Department of Germanic, Slavic and
Semitic Studies.
Up to 8 units of UD
electives in related fields may be applied to the major by
petition.
A year of study abroad at a German-speaking institution
of higher learning is highly recommended. Students are encouraged
to supplement their major by completing 20 or more upper-division
units in another discipline such as political science or history.
Students who wish to enter such fields as political
science, business, or economics, the teaching credential program,
or a masters program with a teaching emphasis, should study
political, linguistic, and social issues of contemporary Germany.
Minor - German Studies
All courses to be applied to the minor must be completed
on a letter-grade basis. This includes both courses offered in
German and those offered by other departments and applied to the
minor.
Preparation for the minor:
German 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, 6 or equivalent (0-24 units)
Upper-division minor requirements:
20 units,
distributed as follows:
A. Two courses from: German 101A-B-C
B. 12 upper-division units of electives
