Webpage Tutorial

Preliminary Tasks:

1. Obtain a web account
• faculty: http://www.lsit.ucsb.edu/lsweb/accounts/
• students: http://www.uweb.ucsb.edu/
2. Decide on software, e.g. Netscape Composer, Front Page, Dreamweaver
3. Create and name a folder on your harddrive
4. Launch software

Creating Basic Webpages:

1. Create the Main/Home Page: "index.html"
2. Contents: Formatting Text
• aesthetics: fonts, colors
• headings, horizontal lines
3. Contents: Writing a paragraph
4. Using Tables
5. Images (finding, manipulating, inserting images)
6. Creating other pages (syllabus, announcements, homework/assignments
• linking the pages
• opening a blank page
7. Creating links within pages
• inserting "mail-to"
• linking to external pages

Uploading pages:

1. Go to "Site" menu and select "New Site

   a. Local Info

• Site Name: give your site a name, e.g. German 1
• Local Root Folder: choose the folder on your computer that contains all your files
• HTTP address: http://www.gss.ucsb.edu/faculty/dmchun/classes/ger500
• Cache: make sure "Enable cache" is checked

b. Remote Info

• Server Access: FTP
• FTP Host: www.gss.ucsb.edu
• Login: YOUR LOGIN
• Password: YOUR PASSWORD
