Course Description:

Applied Linguistics is a large field, and only a small portion of the field can be examined in a quarter. This course will focus on what research in second language acquisition (SLA) tells us about language teaching and learning. We will discuss different methodologies of foreign language teaching, briefly tracing the history of methodologies used in the U.S., with special emphasis on the ones currently enjoying widespread use. We will discuss practical applications of SLA theories and methodologies to languages taught by class participants. In Spring 2005, the next course in this sequence, German 262B, will cover theories of SLA from a variety of perspectives, e.g., UG, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, sociocultural theory.

Course Materials:

Course Requirements:

Reading, active participation in discussions, leading one class discussion*.

(*To prepare for leading the discussion, select a few key ideas from the chapter or article and prepare a few questions for discussion. You should assume that everyone will have read the chapter/article, so you do not need to summarize it. Most important is to identify controversial or confusing issues that can be discussed during class.)
