The University of California Education Abroad Program provides several different opportunities for students to study in Germany. First, there is the "traditional" year-long option, and students may spend the entire academic year at Georg-August University in Göttingen, or they may choose to study in Göttingen in the fall semester and then in Berlin in the spring (at one of EAP's four partner institutions: Free University, Humboldt University, Technical University, or the University of Potsdam). Second, there are different one-semester programs, all in the spring semester, which run from April to July (so that students can complete the winter quarter at UCSB before going abroad). (1) Students with zero to one quarter of university-level German may attend the spring semester Language and Society Program at Georg August University in Göttingen and can complete all of first-year German in one semester. (2) Students who have taken two to three quarters of university-level German may attend the spring semester Language and Society Program at the University of Bayreuth and can complete all of second-year German in one semester. (3) Undergraduates with advanced German language skills may spend the spring term in Göttingen, taking courses in a wide range of fields at Georg-August University. UCSB is an active participant in the UC Education Abroad Program hosted by the European University in Moscow. Qualified students (both undergraduate and graduate) are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to spend the fall academic term abroad. Advanced and Intermediate programs are available. The Advanced Program is designed for students who have completed at least two years of university-level Russian. This program is designed for those who wish to increase their fluency in the language by spending an extended period of time living in Russia; it is also ideal for heritage speakers who need to develop writing skills in academic Russian. The program begins with a month-long intensive language session, followed by a regular fall semester term with courses such as the following, most which are taught in Russian: "Rise and Fall of Communism in Russia" "Russian Literature and Culture through Film," "Russian Literature," and "Russian Economy and Society in Transition," Students normally choose two of these content courses, each of which is supplemented by a language links course, in addition to an Advanced Grammar course. The Intermediate Program is designed for students who have completed one year of university-level Russian. This program is ideal for students who wish to complete three full years of Russian instruction within a two-year time period. The material covered in the intermediate grammar course mirrors that covered on UC campuses in 2nd and the beginning of 3rd year. Students supplement the grammar course with two content courses chosen from "Twentieth Century Russian History," "Russian Economy and Society in Transition" (both taught in English), or "Russian Literature and Culture through Film" (taught in Russian) |
