German Undergraduate Major - 2009-2010

Bachelor of Arts - German

Preparation for the major:
German 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (with grades of C or higher) or placement beyond German 6 in the departmental placement examination. Note: Students who have completed a more advanced course in a lowe-division sequential series will not be permitted to take a course that is lower in the series.
Recommended: German 8A-B-C

Upper-division major:
44 UD German units are required, distributed as follows:

A. German 101A-B-C (Advanced German)
B. German 107A-B-C (History and Culture)
C. German 190 (Proseminar)
D. German 103 or 104 (Linguistics)
E. German 115A or B or C (Literature)
F. 8 units of UD German electives

Recommended: German 105A-B-C

Courses dealing with Germany in areas such as History, Art History, Political Science, and Comparative Literature may be applied by petition to the UD electives after a consultation with an academic advisor.

A year of study abroad at a German-speaking institution of higher learning is highly recommended.
Students, especially those who intend to pursue German at the graduate level, are encouraged to supplement their major by selecting, in consultation with their major advisor, 20 units of courses from another literary, historical or philosophical discipline, such as Political Science or History.
