What happened to the Discussion Forum?

2005-3-09

We decided to close down the discussion forum for the time being because of complaints of abuse, immaturity, as well as breaches of security by hackers and spammers.  A revised forum format (phbBB) was successful in circumventing these problems but proved so complex that it discouraged our readers from participating.  We hope to be able to institute a moderated forum in the future which allows an editor to use his/her good judgment in promoting a free discussion at a level appropriate for an intelligent and substantive exchange of ideas.

How to find what you are looking for on the Hermann Hesse Page (HHP)
2002-01-22

The Freefind Search engine at the bottom of the HHP startup page offers you commercial-free searches of all the 1800 individual pages, including the documents in Adobe's .pdf  format.  Read the instructions on how to use this excellent software for even very sophisticated searches, for example for lines of prose or poetry which you remember only approximately.  You can use similar strategies on Google.com for instance when you have a passage in quotation marks and follow it with a + directly in front of any author's last  name.

Quicker access to the Hesse Page (HHP)

You are invited to use the link "Menu" on the top toolbar of the main page as a quick menu to access various sites within HHP.  If you bookmark this as your entry point, you may save yourself some time.

Improved "Search" function on the 1468 pages of HHP
12/10/01

The search program provided with HHP now includes searches within the many important documents in the PDF format (Adobe Acrobat) which are usually longer than normal web pages (HTML format) and which maintain the format, fonts, illustrations and other features of the original documents perfectly, regardlesss of what kind of computer or operating system you use. In most cases you will find that the search takes you not only to the page on which your search item is located, but even to the lines of text. It is still advisable, however, to search for single characteristic words or names that are normally contained in longer expressions.  Avoid using articles and conjunctions etc. One feature you will welcome in this new search engine is the absence of advertising.
