George Wallis Field was emeritus professor, German, Victoria College, University of Toronto. He was born 5 March 1914 in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada and passed away on December 18, 2002. He had earned his M.A. and PhD.degrees at the University of Toronto. He edited volumes of Theodor Fontane and Heinrich Heine in the MACMILLAN’S Modern Language Texts series. He was the author of a number of articles on Schiller, Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse in such periodicals as Monatshefte, Queen’s Quarterly, The German Quarterly, University of Toronto Quarterly and German Life and Letters. He is the author of Hermann Hesse. New York, Twayne, 1970, Hermann Hesse : Kommentar zu Sämlichen Werken. Stuttgart, Heinz, 1977, 19792, A Literary History of German in the Nineteenth Century: 1830 - 1890. London, Ernest Benn and New York, Barnes and Noble,1975. Professor Field visited Hermann Hesse at his home in Montagnola in 1957. A Festschrift was published in 1980 entitled The First World War in German Narrative Prose : Essays in Honour of George Wallis Field. It was edited by Charles N. Genno and Heinz Weltzel and published by the University of Toronto Press.
